This attractive fruit <cough> is called a Medlar.
When it is ripe, it’s still not edible. It has to sit and soften for more than two weeks, before it can be eaten.
Apparently, they taste like cinnamon applesauce, with a hint of wine.
Cinnamon is supposed to be an aphrodisiac, but I rather doubt Eve would have got the same reaction from Adam if she had offered one of these delightful-looking things, instead of an apple.
Around the world, these fruit (which are mostly only available in Iran) are called a variety of other names including Azgil, Cat’s Arse, Open-Arse, and Cul-de-Chien. I leave it up to you to imagine why they acquired those names!
I just have to work this fruit into a story somewhere….!

I was surprised when I saw the picture as I thought you were referring to a fruit I had in Spain; it was part of that hotel’s morning buffet. It tasted like Apple pie with all its spices. It was green and had soft spikes all over it. When you cut into it, it was (if I remember correctly) whitish in color. If I could have brought some back I would have.
Not quite the same thing, Dina — the Medlars are soft, squishy and the colour of strong coffee when they’re ready to eat!
