Silent Night is probably one of the world’s most famous and beloved Christmas carol. There is an awe and majesty in the tune that really fits with the lyrics, and if a really good singer is performing the carol solo, it can send shivers down your back.
If you’ve ever witnessed the first snowfall of winter, then gone outside and listened to the muffled silence that comes with it, then you probably understand the “feel” of Silent Night perfectly…the sensation that the whole world is holding its collective breath.
The carol was first performed on this day in 1818, at the Church of St. Nikolaus, Oberndorff, Austria.
For those of you who celebrate Christmas, I hope you have (or had, if you’re reading this post-Christmas day) a wonderful day with friends and family, and that you indulged just enough to suit your tastes.
Merry Christmas!
