I got all excited when I found out that today is Talk Like a Pirate Day. Then I learned that Talk Like A Pirate Day was yesterday. Then thought, “Screw it, this is too good to pass up!”
So.
I have, for years, toyed with the idea of writing a pirate romance series. I mean, really: Pirates. Sailing ships. Tropical islands. Treasure. Sword fights. Daring escapes. Men in billowing white shirts.
Especially the men in billowing white shirts.
There is just one problem. Pirate talk is stoopid.
I’m sorry. I know this is Talk Like a Pirate Day and I’m supposed to be wandering around saying Arrr, matey! and threatening to make people walk the plank, but I don’t think I could keep that up for an entire novel without someone eventually hitting someone else over the head with a belaying pin.
Possibly me.
My pirates would have to be the sexy, dangerous, devil-may-care variety. The sort who smile at the heroine while doing something highly illegal. Who are entirely too good with a sword. Who have complicated pasts, questionable morals, excellent ships, and a regrettable tendency to look spectacular leaning against the rigging.
And, obviously, the shirts.
Actually, the more I write this, the more I’m wondering why I haven’t written these books already.
Here’s the curious thing, though: I can’t remember reading a pirate romance.
I’m quite sure they’re out there. I’m equally sure that some of you have ventured much farther into Romancelandia than I have lately.
So tell me: Have you read a really good pirate romance?
Historical, contemporary, fantasy, paranormal—I don’t particularly care. Give me your pirates. Especially if they’re sexy, devilish, morally questionable, and own at least one billowing white shirt. For research purposes, obviously.
Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day!
