National PTSD Awareness Day (and Month)

Today is the USA annual event, National PTSD Awareness Day.

As a PTSD victim myself (and now fully recovered), I wanted to pause to acknowledge those who currently struggle with the disorder.  It is most common among military personnel, but it can strike assault victims and victims of other traumas, too.

It can be an immobilizing, life-altering problem, which is ironic, for the cause of the disorder is another life-altering event, so both event and outcome compound the fallout.

Like most major events and interests in my life, PTSD has also crept into my fiction.  I wrote Diana By The Moon when I was still in the final stages of dealing with PTSD and the event that incurred it (a whole eight years after the event!).

Diana By The Moon is set in sub-Roman Britain, when King Arthur may or may not have been active (depending on which historical source you listen to).  The heroine, Diana, is suffering through PTSD herself, only no one back then was aware of the disorder.  The impact on Diana’s life is severe and debilitating, until the hero learns of her issues…

A heartwrenching story of love, loss and triumph.

Diana, an independent Roman woman in a time when women are mere property, is forced to provide food and shelter for an entire northern British estate.  She trusts no one.

Alaric, fierce and proud Celtic warrior, and trusted lieutenant to the upstart British leader, Arthur, must have Diana’s estate to complete his mission. Failure would doom all of Britain.

Alaric and Diana reluctantly cooperate to ensure survival, but famine, Saxon raids, a harsh winter and the coniving of mutual enemies test their resolve.

A story of sacrifice, courage, loyalty and untimately, a love that erases the boundaries of culture and upbringing, providing hope for a better future for themselves and those who follow in their footsteps.
