Candle in the Wind (Diana, 1997)

It’s been fifteen years since Lady Diana, the former Princess of Wales died in a hideous car wreck in the tunnels of Paris, pursued by paparazzi, and trying to outrun them for a moment of privacy.

I didn’t read every single report that came out of that event, but one I did read has stuck with me.  The surgeon who worked on her reported that the impact that killed her was so severe, her heart has been completely severed inside her chest – all four ventricles had been detached.  The mind boggles at the sort of speed necessary to create that type of damage.

But quite apart from the staggering drama of her death, Diana’s life still continues to influence masses of people even today.

I was not a huge Diana fan even when she was alive, although I admired the way she turned herself around after the press mauled her in her early innocent years.

The thing that fascinates me is how a single person can wield such enormous influence over world affairs.

She was just one determined person.

It reminds me yet again of the ability of a small group of people to change the world as we know it.

Don’t give up.
