I’m reading only two books at the moment. It’s kinda scary.
My reading time has been chopped down to next to nothing because I’m writing and releasing so many books. I think I’m squeezing in maybe five minutes a day, and I fight to do that much.
But I’ve been bitten by a fiction book — a rare and delightful event.
Laurie Breton’s Coming Home was a free pick-up from Amazon that I took on whim. The storyline had appeal — a rock star husband and writer wife, and the story of their marriage spread across twenty years. It’s not your usual romance storyline.
I’ve done a bit of research and discovered the book has been marketed as contemporary mainstream fiction — not romance at all, so I guess that explains the departure from the usual romance formula. But the opening chapter is the most perfect set up for a romance novel, ever: She is engaged to the boy back home and is four weeks away from her wedding, when the potential rock star turns up in her home town and says she has potential as a music writer so come with him, now, and write for him. Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place!
The book rolls on from there, providing Casey, the heroine, with one hard dilemma after another as life takes its toll. I haven’t finished the book yet, but unlike the majority of the indie titles I pick up from Amazon, I know this is one I will hang on until the end, just dying to know how it turns out.
The other book I’m reading, also on Kindle, is Cheryl K. Tardiff’s How I Made Over $42,000 in 1 Month Selling My Kindle eBooks. This is more a reference book than light reading, as I map out my own business plan for the next year or so.
Tardiff supplies sales figures and strategies in a series of replicated blog posts from her six months of experiments with Amazon’s KDP Select program. It’s very interesting reading for indie authors and those considering indie publishing.
