Vampires Aren't Sexy Any More?
The RomantiCon 2009 convention in Ohio ended on Sunday, and early reports filtering through from the authors and readers who attended that convention include the feedback from readers that sat in on a paranormal panel where readers got to tell the Ellora’s Cave authors and editors what they liked and didn’t like about paranormal romance these days.
One of the things I’m hearing on the lists from the authors that attended that panel and soaked up what readers were saying about paranormals included the fact that many of the readers were finding vampire romances…well, meh, these days. If they picked up a vampire romance at all, it was only if the romance included a real strong element of something else that made the vampires in it different or unusual.
Vampire romances need to have a twist, in other words, to hold readers’ attention.
Wow! Just when you thought the ultimate hero could never die.
Bear in mind that this was a very small cross-slice of a very large romance-reading population. But it was (I’m told) a majority of the readers in the room expressing this opinion that vampires — as they currently appear in romance fiction — had grown stale and they were no longer interested in reading romances that featured them.
Double wow.

Well, I’m not ready to write off vamp stories yet. Love them as heroes and am always on the look out for any great paranormal story.
Oh good! I’m not ready to do that yet, either! I think they’ve got some mileage in them yet, too. — Teal.
