Today Is Aussie Day…Sort of.
Today is Australia Day, usually one of the hottest days of the year, a public holiday to boot, when all good Aussies take a day off, and many watch a one day international cricket match when the Australian cricket team slaughters some poor slobs — usually, I hope, Pakistan or better yet, the West Indies, which makes for damn fine cricket. Lots of people don’t get cricket and think it’s oddly boring, but like chess, it’s all about strategy, and when it’s packed into one day rather than five, it can be a fabulous game to watch, especially when you have good company.
This all takes place in the shade (the watching, that is), with liberal amounts of libation. Booze, in other words. It’s the only way to handle a forty-degree day (117 degrees farenheit for you North Americans).
But I’m at the wrong end of the date line, so by the time Aussies in Australia actually get to read this, they’ll be stumbling into the kitchen to fix a cure for their hangovers, and wincing at the blindingly bright morning, and Australia Day, the official version, will be yesterday.
It’s still Australia Day for me, sitting here in Canada, where the snow is three feet deep and my back is aching from having shovelled the drive and front path yesterday, and the last time I watched cricket was fourteen years ago.
The closest I get to Australia these days is to imagine my way there, which is what I did with Ningaloo Nights late last year. I enjoyed “returning” to Australia so much I might just have to do it again.
Think you could stand the strain? :)
