But if the publishing industry had ever figured out why one book breaks through to the top of a best seller list and not others, then it would have been able to ensure every authors’ income for the five hundred years since moveable type was invented.

The great thing about the success of Fifty Shades of Grey is that like Twilight and Harry Potter before it, it will open the general reading population’s minds and tastebuds to erotic romance, like Twilight and Harry taught everyone to gobble up anything to do with the paranormal. Not everyone will find the BDSM in Fifty to their taste: You are either hardwired for pain/pleasure or you aren’t. But readers may turn to the other erotic elements in the novel as more appealing if the BDSM doesn’t do it for them.

And erotic romance will find a massive, new audience. A mainstream one.

There’s plenty of titles for them to explore. Thanks to ebooks, where erotic romance first found traction, there’s nearly fifteen years of titles still “in print,” and available, that have never left the virtual shelves.

But…some of those really early titles are likely to be disappointing, if these new readers are looking for hot, like hot hot, because the earlier titles aren’t as hot as what’s being produced today.

Romances in general are getting spicier by the year, to the point where what was once considered erotic, even ten years ago, is today’s average romance novel.

Consider this sliding scale. If this is what was “hot” back in 2000:

I published my first erotic romance in 2003, and it was considered an averagely hot romance novel. The hottest novels were really pushing the envelope, dealing with (gasp!) anal sex — Lora Leigh’s infamous hot August Brothers series were flying off the shelves at this time, for example.

Around 2003/4 erotic romance exploded all over the romance industry and really broke through in mainstream romance readers’ consciousness — but only within the romance industry for now — thanks to TV series like Sex and the City. And suddenly everyone was writing erotic romance, or publishing it. And everyone was clamouring for hot, hotter, hottest.

Spin through the years to 2012 as the envelope for “hot” got pushed harder and harder. And here we sit:

What the romance industry considers “erotic romance” has shifted far to the right. Just graphic sex won’t do it anymore. Two years ago, Ellora’s Cave set the standard with its authors that all sex scenes had to include some sort of anal penetration of the heroine in order to be considered acceptably hot enough for Ellora’s Cave, which meant that standard MF sex had fallen off the radar as “erotic romance” as far as Ellora’s Cave were concerned, and tumbled into the merely “sensual romance” domain, regardless of how graphically it was described.

On the other hand, publishers of what used to be considered non-erotic romances have been steadily pushing their standards to meet reader demands, and now what they are releasing looks a lot like what was first being produced as erotic romance ten or twelve years ago, but is now labelled merely as “spicy romances”…and is, according to today’s standards. Yet there are erotic romance publishers out there releasing exactly the same sort of novels, but under the “erotic romance” label.

This year, The Romance Studio did away with their “Erotic” category altogether in their CAPAs (Cupid and Psyche Awards), and combined the categories together. There is no longer, for example, a CAPA for Best Erotic Paranormal and a separate one for Best Paranormal. There is just a single CAPA for Best Paranormal. This is a telling statement from one of the most influential review houses in the romance industry. They clearly consider the erotic distinction to be no longer useful when romances in general have shifted ground so much to include elements of erotic romance.

In the next few years, as erotic romance boundaries keep sliding, I believe that erotic romances will shift completely to the right and become a highly specialized, tiny (but not as tiny as it used to be thanks to books like Fifty Shades of Grey) niche market catering to select readers with exotic tastes: BDSM, extreme sexual situations, and more. The rest of us will enjoy our romances with frank open-door sex, menage, MMF and more, but it will all be one market again: Romances.

Then we’ll be left with the pleasureable problem of sorting out which romances we want to read, out of the thousands now hitting the market each month, instead of the merely hundreds it used to be.

It’s a tough ol’ world…

But Sunday, which is usually the day when everything on the Internet falls quieter than the grave, suddenly got busy.

And, I’ve had a small flurry of reader emails with questions about future books that I thought I would answer here, as well as the private answers I gave, in case others were wondering the same thing.

Bannockburn Binding was nominated for Book Of The Year 2011 by The Romance Reader. It just manages to scrape in for this honour because it was released on December 13 last year, so it was a great surprise — especially as the book is indie-published. A nice hats-off.

Now, though, the winner is selected by reader votes. I’m always reluctant to trawl for reader votes. There’s so many polls and reader-vote elections out there, and in my category alone there are about twenty books, each with their individual author possibly hounding readers for votes! So…I’m not begging you to vote. However, if you have read Bannockburn Binding and really feel you would like to vote for it, you can click here, then scroll down to the erotic paranormal category (about half-way down the page). Bannockburn Binding is the second book is the category.

The Royal Talisman received a very nice 4 Star review from Love Romance Passion.

The review itself was short on detail about why the reviewer liked the book so much, but she did like the special features a lot, which was nice. She also gave Dar Albert, the cover artist, a lovely thumbs up, too.

___

From the mailbox:

A reader was anxiously asking if there will be any more books after Byzantine Heartbreak, and another reader/reviewer wants to see Brenden’s story…and what are the release dates.

Yes, there will most definitely be more books in the series. At this point in time I can’t say how many more, but this is not a simple trilogy, by any means. I consider the series to be open-ended with ambitious, complex story-lines and character arcs.

Look at the cover montage for the series. There’s two way to do that: Place each book cover for the series side by side to build up the montage that way. Or “cheat” and jump to the series information page to see the full montage spread in one view. Apart from being awed by Dar Albert’s artistic talents, you’ll also notice there’s a lot of room for a lot more covers on that montage. I planned it that way. :)

Release Dates

As for release dates…well, that’s one of the joys — and pitfalls — of indie publishing. The advantages, especially to you the reader, is that I can release these books as fast as I can write and edit them, plus or minus a week or two for formatting and for Dar Albert to build covers (and she’s very fast). The down side is that it does take time to edit, format and upload to all the various retail sites, and those sites won’t hold or delay a release, nor will they guarantee exactly how long it takes to build a sales page for a book. So there is no way to predict, for example, the exact date and time a book will appear on the Amazon site, even though I know exactly when I upload it to Amazon. That part of it is out of my control. The same applies for all the retail sites — Barnes & Noble, etc.

Therefore, all I can say in regard to a release date for future books in the series is that they will be as soon as I’ve written the books — and I’m a pretty fast writer — and that your best best is to either sign up for my newsletter or sign up for the email version of my RSS feed, so it is delivered to your email in-box. That way, you’ll get an alert about the release of any books, and won’t miss out.

___

I’ve updated the Recommended MMF Romances list.

I’ve added some more titles, and I rearranged the list into sub-genre groups.

___

A reader asked what happened to the Kiss Across Time series, and Kiss Across Chains, the third book in that series, which up and disappeared.

The Time-Crossed Love series was first released under the Teal Ceagh pen name with Ellora’s Cave. It’s one of my favourite series of all time, and I love and adore Brody and Veris and their extreme alpha-male outlook on life and time. I was never so happy as I was when I was prompted into writing Kiss Across Swords by readers and reviewers who <del>belly-ached</del> politely asked for more about their histories and…well, just more of them.

I have the third book of the series, Kiss Across Chains, half-written, and ideas for six more in the series. Like Beloved Bloody Time, this is not going to be a simple trilogy.

But, the first two books of the series remain with Ellora’s Cave for now. I am working to have the rights returned to me, but until I do, I won’t release the third book in the series. To do so would only further cement the first two books where they currently sit, and there are things I want to do with the first two books before I release the third (including issue them with uniform covers, expand the first book to make it a longer book, and more.)

So for now, this series must wait in the wings.

___

“I wish I could join a board or something and review your books, they are that great.”

There’s two parts to this: Reviews and discussion boards.

Reviews.

There are any number of places you can leave a reader review about my books, if you feel moved to do so. I encourage you like crazy to do this.

As more and more indie authors start publishing more and more books, one of the few ways readers will be able to figure out which are the good books and which are the duds are through other readers’ reviews — and there will be more and more duds: It’s part of the price we pay for the flood of cheap, great and really interesting reads on the market.

Your review doesn’t have to be perfect prose. Just a paragraph or two of simple, clear English saying what you thought about the book, and why you did (or didn’t) enjoy it — what made it work for you? Keep it impersonal (no attacks on the author themselves), and rate the book, and you’re done.

The absolute best place to leave your review is Amazon. Even if you didn’t buy your book there. That’s because huge numbers of people research about what book they want to buy next on Amazon, and then they sometimes buy the book elsewhere because they want a different format, or can buy it cheaper elsewhere, or for other reasons. But they’ll research on Amazon first, because the information about individual books is so thorough and complete.

So you’ll be doing me all sorts of favours by leaving your review about my book on Amazon.

Discussion Boards

Amazon to the rescue again. Did you know that every single book on Amazon has its own unique discussion board?

If you scroll down to where the general discussion boards start, way down the bottom of the book’s page, just above those board subject lines, there is a live link to the book’s discussion page. Most of the time (well, all of the time, for my books! LOL!) the discussion is empty. But if you want to start a discussion group for a book (anyone’s book), or join it, you’ll find the link to the book’s discussion group right there. Click on it, and dive in.

__

The biggest news of the weekend, and the last to arrive in my in-box, was the brand new cover for Delly’s Last Night. The cover, another Dar Albert spectacular, is mind-blowing. I don’t know if you’ve ever taken the time to double-click on the covers here on the site, and look at them when they’re at full size or better. It’s worth it. Then you really get to appreciate the full stunning detail. They’re mind-bogglingly beautiful. And the amazing thing is, Dar builds these covers from scratch. She creates them out of nothing. She doesn’t use stock photos except in the background sometimes, when I insist on historical accuracy, or well-known buildings.

Check out the cover for Delly’s Last Night, and click on it to see it at full size.

I stayed up late on Sunday night and formatted the book for release, so now you can buy it, too. :)

Part 6: Keeping Track
_____

You know how to read MMF romance now. You just need to know where to find ‘em.

Heading for your nearest bookstore is not the obvious answer. Surprise! The vast majority of MMF romances are published digitally, many of them only in e-book form — or in e-book first, and in print much, much later, or the print version isn’t available at your local bookstore, or both, or all three — so if you haven’t made the switch to e-book reading yet, this may be the excuse you need to jump over.

One major advantage to reading MMF romances in e-book form is that everyone sitting opposite you on the bus won’t be able to tell what you’re reading by the lurid cover featuring three scantily clad bodies in suggestive poses that you’re holding in your hands. An e-book reader looks so much more innocent by comparison…

There’s a three-step process to finding your first MMF romance to read. It’s the same process for finding new-to-you authors every time you go looking for fresh voices, new categories, or want to try something new in MMF.

1. Build a list of lots of potential book possibilities
2. Do some easy (and fun) research to narrow down your list and figure out which of these books are for you, and make your choice
3. Keep simple records of your reading, so you can zoom straight back to the source of that great book for more of the same.

It sounds like a pretty simple process, and because it’s all done on-line you can sip your favourite beverage while you’re doing it. But because we’re talking about sex and an industry that is still trying to figure out which way is up, it’s not quite as simple as it sounds.

Here’s the quickest way to get the most effective results. This way, you stand the best chance of not missing out on any MMF titles that might be hiding on some tiny little publisher’s site that is absolutely perfect for you.

Build a list of lots of potential book possibilities

For this step, quantity is the key.

You want as many MMF romance titles on your list that sound intriguing to you as you can find. And for this stage, you cast your net wide. Even if you prefer to only shop on Barnes & Noble.com, you don’t only search there. You search everywhere. You can buy your books on B&N later (or even B&N at your local mall), when you’ve made your final decision. But for now, you’re just collecting information, and for that, you look under every virtual rock and leaf.

1. Amazon

Start here.

Even if you can’t stand Amazon as a retailing, power-weilding behemoth, start here, because virtually every publisher in the western world has their titles listed here. Remember, you don’t have to buy from Amazon. You’re just researching. Also, if you want to buy your books in a different format, you can still research here, and buy elsewhere.

And the truly glorious facet about Amazon is categories and tags. Amazon allows authors, publishers and readers to add tags to books, earmarking them for other readers to find. And you can search on those tags.

And yes, there’s a tag for MMF romances. How wonderful! If you click here, you can jump straight to a pre-sorted list. You can arrange that list by rankings, popularity, best-sellers and more. Start clicking on titles and covers that intrigue you, and reading the blurbs and excerpts, reader reviews (another advantage that Amazon offers) and building your list of possibilities.

When you have run out of title possibilities at Amazon (and that could take a while), you may want to try:

2. Goodreads

Members of Goodreads add their favourite books to growing recommendation lists, and there’s a collection of various MMF romance ones:

Favourite MMF romance

You can possibly access the lists without becoming a member of Goodreads (something I can’t test for myself, as I’m a member), but consider joining anyway and paying forward for the work that went into these lists by adding your own recommendations when you come across MMF romance novels that you enjoy as well. As you can tell from this article, tracking down good MMF romances isn’t always as obvious as it may seem.

3. My own Recommended MMF Romance List.

I started building this list in March 2012, pulling from 4 and 5 star MMF romances from Goodreads, Amazon, and All Romance eBooks — including the lists I quoted above…and I’ll always be building it. It is a work in progress. I vet and cross-check titles to eliminate the ones that aren’t really MMF romances (they just have a bit of menage fun, but they don’t end up MMF forever, say, or they’re really MFM, but they crept onto an MMF list somewhere, sometime, and now they’re just copied onto everyone’s list). There’s a bigger and longer explanation for the filtering I do here.

4. Romance Publisher Sites

I won’t break down every publisher’s site individually, but I will give you one example, because I know it better than others. Be wary of heading directly to publisher sites, because if you’ve already combed through Amazon, then the titles you find on the publisher site will probably be repeats. There are two minor advantages to heading directly to publisher sites:

Some publishers delay uploading their books to secondary retail sites like Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble by days or weeks, so you will pick up titles that haven’t reached the retailers yet.

The classification of the publishers’ titles may help you find MMF romance books that readers/authors/reviewers have missed on Amazon.

On the other hand:

You can spend a lot of time searching individual publishers’ sites, for the odd one or two titles you may have missed on Amazon…that you could eventually catch up with later, via reviews, word-of-mouth, etc.

If you have the time to spare, and a favourite publisher, you may consider the exercise worth it. But digging out MMF Romances, even on a romance-only publisher’s site, can prove to be a challenge.

Ellora’s Cave, for example, have an entire category devoted to “Menage or more” (which is actually a misnomer, but…). You can sort their entire library of available erotic romance novels on that category link. Which sounds great…until you start combing through the 35 pages of book titles (not books, titles) within that category. And you realize that some of these group romances are MFM, some might be MMF and some (these days) are even MFF. Even more might feature more than three, but it’s hard to tell, really, by the descriptions.

There’s a sneaky backdoor way to narrow down your search with a bit more certainty. If you search the MM category, which comes just below the menage category, then open up each title, and look for the little three people icon that indicates the book is, in fact, a menage, then you know you’ve got an MMF menage on your hands.

However. If you’re gun-shy about MM sex, then this isn’t going to work for you, first title up. Ellora’s Cave only slap the MM category on romances that have very strong MM story lines. As in, that’s the dominant thrust of the romance.

I have published seven MMF romances with Ellora’s Cave in the past and none of them made it into the MM category and one of them had very nearly more MM romance than MF.

But for later MMF romance titles, if you acquire a taste for it, this will be a great way to hunt down new authors who write strong MM storylines.

For any other publisher, you will have to do similiar detective work on how they sort their romance titles, menages (if at all) and what sort of advanced search functions they offer for you to further filter their titles.

Finally, don’t forget that Google Search has an advanced search function that lets you search an individual site, too, so if you’re really determined to mine your favourite publisher for gold, Google might cough up nuggets for you if the publisher themselves don’t offer tools that do the work. Just add your publisher’s name to the line that says “Search within a site or domain”.

—

You’ll notice I haven’t sent you off to Barnes&Noble.com, Kobo.com, Sony, Apple, and a host of other on-line retailers and book-sellers. Yes, even Smashwords, AllRomanceEbooks, and the new e-tailers who are right there supporting indie authors.

I’m steering you clear of those guys for a reason. Even if they’re your favourite, most trustworthy bookstore in the world, their range of information about romance novels, and MMF romance in particular, frankly sucks. They might sell the novels you’ll end up wanting to buy, but trying to extract those titles from the morass of “romance” novels lumped together on their sites is a quick lesson in frustration acceleration. These sites are not researcher-friendly. There’s also a pretty good chance they don’t carry all the titles Amazon does, so you’re automatically limiting your range by starting with them.

Which it was.

They had no idea at the time that Split Enz would be disbanded less than a year later, in 1984, after a massive world tour.

I happen to be a huge Split Enz fan. And not just because they’re from Australia and New Zealand, although I wasn’t when they were alive and kicking. Wish I was. I would have loved to have seen that world tour. I’ve heard the live albums and I’m brought to a staggered stand-still every time. Alas, I haven’t got around to inventing time travel in real life, yet.

However…

There is a point to this seemingly random trivia about a long-gone band with weird hair-cuts, so bear with me.

Split Enz may have disbanded back in 1980, but Neil and Tim Finn, two of the core band members, re-invented themselves. They created another band, Crowded House, and continued in their prolific and talented way to churn out album after album of astonishingly good and uniquely different rock music — this time without the weird haircuts.

Crowded House is still producing albums and doing world tours in 2011. I’m a member of their Facebook fan page, and own all the albums. I’m listening to Crowded House as I write this post. A Split Enz song — Message to my Girl — in my husband’s personalized ring tone on my cellphone, while a Crowded House song – Weather with You – is the generalized ring tone for anyone else who calls me.

I don’t do concerts.

But if Crowded House came (back) to Edmonton, I’d buy tickets over the odds to go see them. They’re that good, live. (I missed the last concert they did here by two weeks – I was out of town.)

And here’s my point.

Everything has a natural cycle. The year, trees, seasons, bands…and books.

Today, seven of my books reach the end of their current cycle. They’ve been released from Ellora’s Cave, and going “out of print” for a while.

While they’re on hiatus, I will be cleaning them up, having them edited and repackaged with new covers, possibly new titles, additional content and special features, and republished in new formats and pricing.

The seven titles are:

Betting With Lucifer

Dare to Return

Dead Again

Dead Double

Diana By the Moon

Eyes of a Stranger

Thief in the Night

While the books are on hiatus, their pages will show them as unavailable and out-of-print. I’ve already made the changes to those pages. It’s possible you’ll still be able to buy copies here and there until supplies of print issues are sold out, but you won’t be able to buy copies of the EC editions directly from Amazon, or Ellora’s Cave, after today.

Some of the series can be found on my articles pages, including the most recent installment, Dark Elves, and those such as the Demon Hunter post.

Wikipedia defines High Elves as:

…a tall, slim and regal built race. They are seen as a noble race, and tend to be beautiful or handsome in appearance. Elves are a paled skinned race. Elves are strong and agile in comparison with humans and are often seen as more intelligent and wiser. Elves have a longer life span than humans do. Elves build refined weapons that are seen as master craftsmanship by other races. They use swords, bows and lances mainly they don’t like using crossbows or gunpowder weapons.

High Elves should be instantly familiar to mass audiences nearly everywhere in the world now thanks to Peter Jackson, who made them famous through his adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. J.R.R. Tolkein stole High Elves from Nordic mythology almost unchanged. He even gave them an undying land to escape to when they were weary of Middle Earth, Tolkein’s version of Midgard, the Nordic mythological name for Earth. In Nordic mythology, the High Elves live in Álfheimr, apart from humans, but they interact from time to time.

Elves in modern, popular fiction have grown beyond this sketchy cultural framework into staple race of high fantasy. They’re sometimes seen in fantasy romance, urban fantasy romance (including mine).

Ellora’s Cave novels that feature elves:
