Promissory Note

A lively romantic tale that intrigued me with its setting and story.

I thoroughly enjoyed being drawn-in by the close-up focus on just two characters and their interactions. These characters were delightful in their slowly revealed layers of complexity. The gradual building of their relationship was romantic and understandable too, given the slowly-revealed trials and tribulation that each of them face(d).

This is an imaginative world so different from ours in structure and yet familiar enough to be relatable.

I’m looking forward to reading the next book with eager anticipation = it’s Sci Fi, but not as I previously knew it.

Can two very different people, each with their own secret, work together, especially when one as no choice in the matter.

This 4th book, (but assigned #3 in series) "Promissory Note," in the science fiction series, The Endurance, is amazing. Each book gets better and better. Although it is science fiction it could just as easily be a book on man's sociology and financial downfalls. I believe quite a bit of research, along with the authors terrific imagination and ability, went into the writing of this book and it has given us a great story. Two damaged people come together, but completely unaware of each others "secrets." Individually they both work towards the betterment of those living in a enclosed environment, but as one is forced to work with the other they discover a way to better the future of all and along the way finally allow themselves to love.

I'm glad that in each new book in the series we are able to once again meet people from previous stories, even though decades may have passed. We have a civilization hurling through space to reach their new home a thousand years away from earth. What story will be next in this series, what new problems will arise, what new loves will be discovered, how much further into their future will the story be? I can't wait to find out and neither will you once you begin this fantastic journey with them.

“So you’re really here to see Thorn?” Havel asked, sitting back at his desk.  He turned his chair, then pulled out the chair belonging to the woman who had gone to get Micah Thorn and patted it.

Laura sat down.  It seemed like the friendly thing to do.  Besides, she did appreciate the coffee.  “I really am.”

“Why?  I mean…why you?”

“Why not me?” she asked cautiously.

Havel lifted his hand toward her, then let it fall.  “Well, look at you.  You’re beautiful.”

Someone sniggered in the far corner and she looked around, surprised.

The grey haired man looked up.  “You’re not going to get her to dinner with an approach like that.”

Laura looked at Havel, startled.  Then she gave him what she hoped was a polite smile.  “You’re very sweet.”

Havel wrinkled his nose.  “That’s what every guy wants to hear, that he’s sweet.”

“Give up, Havel,” the grey-haired man said.  “Ms. Hyland keeps company with Oskar Carey.”

There was a small silence.  Havel stared at her while Laura felt her cheeks burn.  “Groundman for the Blues?” he said, sounding impressed.

“You know who I am?” she asked, directing the question at everyone there.  “I didn’t tell you my name.”

“You didn’t have to,” the grey-haired man said.  He ran his hands over the desk then tapped it.  On the screen in front of her appeared one of the public pictures of her and Oskar, taken at the arena just after the end of a game.  “I remember faces,” the grey-haired man added.  “Especially ones like yours.”

“Hoping for dinner yourself, Amil?” Havel asked.

Everyone laughed.

The laughter cut off, like a recording halted in mid-stream.

Laura heard Havel draw in a quick breath.  She swivelled on the chair to look behind her.

Micah Thorne was standing just inside the door at the back of the room, studying her.

There was a scowl on his face.
