Monday Pulse Pause Moment…Let's Hear It For Nicholas Cage–At Least Once.
I tripped over a copy of Moonstruck in the bargain bin at my media store the other day, and grabbed it, delighted. I loved the movie when it first came out although I have to admit that Nicholas Cage really doesn’t do it for me most of the time…especially lately. But for this movie, he really did.
I watched the movie the other night, and despite the movie being over twenty years old (made in 1987) and Cher’s hair being bigger than my thighs, it still works really well — the final scene is a killer in both emotions and laughs. John Mahoney (Frasier‘s dad) gets a lovely cameo role in it that I’d completely forgotten about.
But the pulse pause moment is earlier when Ronny (Cage) is trying to convince Loretta (Cher) to come back to his apartment for the second night in a row. The dialogue in this scene is almost perfect. I’m going to try and get it down word for word:
Ronny
“You’re going to marry my brother…Why’d'you wanna sell your life short? Playing it safe’s just about the most dangerous thing a woman like you can do. I mean, you waited for the right man the first time. Why didn’t you wait for the right man again?
Loretta
Because he didn’t come.
Ronny.
I’m here.
Loretta
You’re late.

The look on Cage’s face is priceless. It’s such a hair-on-the-back-of-the-neck-lifting moment.
Catch up with the movie yourself if you can. Quite apart from this one small, timeless romantic moment, the movie is a gem in scripting, characters, comedy and story. Cher won an acacemy for her role. It’s worth a look, if you’ve never seen it, and it’s worth a repeat, if it’s been a while for you. It has aged very well indeed.

I haven’t watched this movie in years, but I loved the chemistry and dialogue between these two. My favorite Nicholas Cage movies are Face Off and Con-Air.
