Monday Pulse Pause Moment – Let's Hear It For A Really Bad Boy
There’s something delicious about a really bad boy, and Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series has no redeeming features whatsoever…except that Jason Isaacs who plays him in the movies is drop dead sexy with his blue eyes and hissing line delivery.
He’s possibly one of the more interesting character actors to come out of England in the last ten years. He pops up all over the place, including a minor role in West Wing in the later years that challenged Josh for Donna’s romantic heart for a while, that was played with understated intensity. He played a great double role as Captain Hook and Wendy’s father in Peter Pan that gave Robin Williams more than a run for his money, and grown women everywhere a new appreciation for old fairytales.
In romance writing circles the theory that currently holds for why readers like bad boys so much is the appeal in seeing them crumble when brought to their knees by the love of a good woman (and their love for that woman).
But Lucius Malfoy doesn’t love one, nor is he loved by one, yet it’s still fascinating to watch him chew up the screen in the Potter movies. Since Sirius Black’s unfortunate demise, he’s one of the best characters roaming the celluloid. Even when he bargains with he
-who-shall-not-be-named, you know he doesn’t really mean it. There’s not a redeemable bone in his body.
So why do we still watch him with such utter fascination? He should be dismissed as a cardboard character, completely flat, one dimensional and with completely predictable reactions. Yet he holds the screen when he’s in the scene.
That’s real talent, and real charisma.
