Hero Moment of the Week – Lucian from Underworld
It’s so great being able to rattle on about paranormal stuff now!
I’m dipping back into an oldie-but-a-goodie again this week, because this is a grand salute at a true hero moment in one of the best urban fantasies out (that still isn’t out in blue ray as a director’s cut yet!! — well, not in Canada, at any rate!)
Michael Sheen played Lucian in the 2003 Underworld and has to be one of the few werewolves that has ever caught my attention in a positive way. He’s also one of the very few actors who looks fabulous with a full beard, too.
But, to get to the point. Lucian plays an absolutely pivotal role in the movie.
~ spoiler alert ~
You go through most of the movie thinking the good guys are good and the bad guys (the werewolves) are bad, and by the end of the movie, find out that actually, some of the vampires are real stinkers and some of the werewolves actually are…almost human. And the most self-sacrificing character in the entire movie is Lucian, the head of the werewolf pack, who has spent centuries working to avenge his vampire lover, and who, at the very end of the movie, gives up his life to ensure that happens. Surprise!
~ end of spoiler alert~
It’s really a heart-rending scene, and Michael Sheen plays it for all it’s worth…and he does it so well, he’s one of the most memorable characters in the movie.
So many people agreed with me, that he ended up with his own movie a few years later. Underworld, Rise of the Lycans featured Sheen in the starring role, and he looked pretty damned good in that, too.
But because he had the starring role, his character could not be given any of the sweeping, heart-rending heroic moments he got in the first movie.
Pity.
Still, there’s some fine moments in the third one, too.

I watched this movie last week (since I was snowed in for 5 days) and loved it. I loved the character and the actor.
I have all three movies at home, but I’m trying to collect them on Blue Ray now as Director’s Editions. That’s proving to be a bit of a challenge…but worth it. These are almost perfect examples of urban fantasy at its best. Well, the first two, anyway.
