Hero Moment of the Week – An Australian Hero At Odds With His Skin
It seemed appropriate as yesterday was Australia Day to salute Sam Worthington — but not for his role in Avatar, which has so taken over the cinema circuit and stolen all the oxygen.
I happened to watch Terminator Salvation again for the second time last night, on Blue Ray, with a good quality sound system, on a big screen television — as near to cinema quality as you can get at home, and it was awesome. So was Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright. The role was an ironic one, really: in an almost-former James Cameron franchise, when his next role was going to be in the James Cameron movie of the decade (so far).
~spoiler alert~
But the hero moment comes fairly early in the movie when Moon Bloodgood snuggles up to him after he’s saved her life, just for warmth, and he freezes, unable to even lay his hand on her back. You can almost hear his thoughts: I can’t touch her. I’m a murderer. I’m a bad guy. I’m unworthy. And his very next words confirm his thoughts and the wishful thinking deep behind them. He spends the rest of the movie trying to earn the right to touch her, to be a good guy, when every move he makes defines him as a hero anyway.
~end of spoiler alert~
I actually hesitated from adding Sam Worthington to the Hero Moment honour role today, because he’s such a big star right now and everyone is focused on him at the moment. Why add a teaspoon of salt to the sea? But after watching him last night I thought it was worth focusing back on the earlier movie. I think his role in that was underrated. Everyone was so wrapped up in Christian Bale and his antics on the set at the time.
