I’d never heard of the Kentucky Derby until a few years after I moved to Canada.
Australia has its own famous four-minute horse race: The Melbourne Cup, which is held the first Tuesday in November each year (and I’m kinda appalled I even know the date – I didn’t have to look it up). Australians are generally inclined to drinking and gambling, so betting on the horses and drinking champagne before noon goes down rather well with most of them.
So I can understand the hoorah surrounding the Kentucky Derby – including the hats!
If you’re betting, good luck! If you’re watching, enjoy!
