Who are your favourite authors at Ellora’s Cave?

Like millions of other readers I started by reading Jaid Black. I didn’t even know the books I most liked reading were erotica until a friend led me to the EC website. I read anything and everything but I do like the spicier books so Lacey Thorn and Desiree Holt are favourite authors. I enjoy light-hearted books too: Amarinda Jones and Ashlyn Chase both make me laugh. And I read and enjoyed your trilogy: Beth’s Acceptance, Mia’s Return, and Sera’s Gift. Hot with a plot, an awesome mix. And Anny Cook’s Mystic Valley series is a favorite of mine too.

What is your favourite novel cover (can be from anywhere)?

The Christina Dodd book, where the heroine ended up with three hands, Castles in the Air. That cover is awesome!

What’s the best Hero Moment you’ve ever seen in film?

Maybe in the Sherlock Holmes movie when he comes up out of the water with his pipe still in his mouth?

What’s the best Hero Moment you’ve ever read in a book?

That would have to be from Gone With the Wind. We could have the classic: “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” or we could go for “This is an honorable proposal of marriage made at what I consider a most opportune moment. I can’t go all my life waiting to catch you between husbands.”

What reading device do you use for reading ebooks on?

My laptop. It goes everywhere with me.

What is your take on the ePublishing phenomenon?  What do you think the book industry will look like in five years time?

I truly believe e-publishing will continue to get bigger and bigger for at least the next five years. E-books are cheaper than print, it’s environmentally friendly, and it’s much more convenient. We are a generation who wants everything “now” and downloading e-books give us that.

Do you ever skip the “I love you!” scene in your novels?  Do you feel you’ve been cheated if they’re missing in other authors’ books?

I only write happy endings, because that is what I prefer as a reader. I always have them say “I love you”, or at least think it, so the reader can see it, not just infer it. I believe there’s enough bad things happening in the real world, and that most readers want the happy ending. However as long as it is clearly happening I don’t know the actual three words need to be typed. Having said that, however, my characters always manage to blurt it out before the book ends.

What’s your take on eBook piracy?  What would you do about it if you were given carte blanche?

I would like to see them walk the plank! Permanently! Seriously, I’d love it if some major company took them to court and sued their collective asses off. There has been a couple of musical piracy cases and I’m hoping it happens soon for e-book pirates as well.

If someone offered you immortality, but you could never write again…would you take the offer?

Oh yeah, I’d accept the offer. Once I’m immortal I’ll figure a way around the not writing bit. Hmm, likely I could dictate my books onto some of that nice voice recognition software? That’s not really writing now is it?

Double Satisfaction is an MMF contemporary story. It released on 28 July from Ellora’s Cave.

Imogen, Gage and Liam relax at a luxury resort for a week’s vacation and some extra-hot ménage sex. The gardens are beautiful, the meals are delicious and the facilities are excellent—swimming pools, beach, tennis and golf. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos reported recently that ebooks are now outselling their hardcover books by over 33%.

“[W]hile our hardcover sales continue to grow, the Kindle format has now overtaken the hardcover format. Amazon.com customers now purchase more Kindle books than hardcover books — astonishing when you consider that we’ve been selling hardcover books for 15 years, and Kindle books for 33 months.” In the past three months average, they’ve sold 143 Kindle ebooks for every 100 hardcovers. In the last month, it was 180 ebooks for every 100 hardcovers. The company has not released any specific figures about total Kindle sales or total ebooks sold.”

While you’re prepping your work for market, you might also find this little tool useful.   Wordle generates word clouds from your own work.

If you’ve hung around blogs long enough then you’re used to seeing category or tag clouds — the groups of words auto-generated where words are bigger or smaller depending on how often they’re used or how importantly they’re ranked on that blog.

Wordle will generate the same sort of word cloud for words you use — or over-use — in your own work.  You can arrange the clouds in a few different ways.

That makes it a great analysis tool for figuring out if you have any bad habits, writing-wise.

It’s also a useful way for spotting if there’s any undetected themes in your stories (what, you didn’t realize chocolate was an underlying obsession in your novels???) and general patterns and habits that you might like to break, or enhance.

Beauty’s Beasts is the second release in Teal Ceagh’s urban fantasy series Guardian Bonds. It’s the first book by the author that I’ve read, but it won’t be the last.

The book is relatively short at around 140 pages but the author has packed a great deal of action, passion, desire, danger and sex within, making it a paranormal lover’s wicked delight. Damian and Nicholas are as different as night and day. Damian is sexy, fun, loving and charming, while Nicholas is brusque, cold and emotionally closed off; yet I liked them both. Riley’s smart, dedicated and a determined control freak who’s scared of getting hurt. The growing relationship of Riley and the vamps is the backbone of the story but training her to survive is what moves the plot forward. Add in Riley’s heritage, the newly resurrected rogue gargoyle clan killing unsuspecting New Yorkers and the demon, Azazel, and you have all the components for an entertaining read in a keeper paranormal series.

The secondary characters are few but important and the twist of having a sculptor, Nathan, involved in was a nice touch I didn’t expect. I also liked Sabrina, Riley’s best friend, and even though her part was rather small in the beginning, her return at the end sets up the next release, Sabrina’s Clan, very nicely. I anxiously await the next installment of this series. Read and enjoy!

I also received a 4.5 star review from Tracy at Tracy’s Place, for my medieval romantic suspense, Heart of Vengeance. Tracy also happens to like my name (funny thing that).  I’m quite sure that has nothing to do with the review.

I would love to tell you all of the ins and outs of this story but it is one that has to be read to truly be appreciated. It is a medieval romance filled with political intrigue and manipulations, scheming mothers, titled yet outlawed Earls, but most of all, love. Though this story is only about 250 pages long it’s truly an epic tale that I thoroughly enjoyed. If you love a good medieval story this would be a great book for you.

Who are your favourite authors at Ellora’s Cave?

The Cougar Challenge authors are at the top of my list. Samantha Kane, Lynne Connolly, Dalton Diaz, Desiree Holt, Mari Carr, Mari Freeman, Ciana Stone, Regina Carlysle, Jayne Rylon, Samantha Cayto, and Fran Lee have novellas out in the series, and those books have sent me to their other work. Hot, hot, hot stuff!

What is your favourite novel cover (can be from anywhere)?

Yeah, I’m prejudiced, but it’s got to be my brand-new work, WHAT SHE NEEDS. After all, I’m on the cover with hunky Caveman Angelo. What’s not to drool over? Especially since PhotoShop made me look 30 years younger. BTW, you can read about my dream photo shoot over at Author Island entitled “15 Minutes in Angelo’s Arms”. What’s the best Hero Moment you’ve ever seen in film?

Liam Neeson in Rob Roy. His wife is raped while he’s away fighting some war, and on his return he discovers her situation. He immediately prepares to pursue them, kisses his pregnant wife passionately in farewell and says, “If it’s a boy, name him after me.”

What’s the best Hero Moment you’ve ever read in a book?

Sam Starrett in one of Suzanne Brockmann’s Team Sixteen books. He’s madly in love with Alyssa Locke but, in a one-night stand after she rejects him, gets a groupie pregnant and does the right thing by marrying her to give his child his name. In a sterling example of “make them wait,” it takes Brockmann the next 3 or 4 Troubleshooter books to give Sam and Alyssa their HEA in GONE TOO FAR.

Or maybe Zarek in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s DANCE WITH THE DEVIL. He’s a Dark Hunter who’s been banished to Alaska for the past 900 years. When you “see” through the blind heroine’s fingers that he’s carved beautiful images onto every surface of his wooden shack, it’s heartbreaking and you realize he really is redeemable and his heart is merely broken, not missing.

What reading device do you use for reading ebooks on?

<sigh> Ever since I accidentally dropped my ancient Rocket eBook (yes, I owned one of the originals), I’ve been reading on my computer. I’ve been meaning to buy a new device, but there are so many now that I can’t decide. I should just close my eyes and choose one, then I could read out in the yard, or in a living room chair, or…

What is your take on the ePublishing phenomenon?  What do you think the book industry will look like in five years time?

Amazon’s Kindle stamped eBooks onto the reading public’s consciousness, and for that I’m grateful. But they didn’t invent eBooks (I’ve been e-published since 1999). Although pixels will never replace paper, I think eBooks are here to stay. There’s certainly room for both. While the one-gadget-does-all intrigues many, I’d love to see dedicated (and cheaper) reading devices get a share of the market.

Do you ever skip the “I love you!” scene in your novels?  Do you feel you’ve been cheated if they’re missing in other authors’ books?

Hell, no! and Hell, yes!

That’s like a Fourth of July picnic without the fireworks. Or a baseball game without the seventh-inning stretch. Okay, not a romantic image, but isn’t LOVE the point of a romance?

What’s your take on eBook piracy?  What would you do about it if you were given carte blanche?

I’ve certainly stressed over it when seeing how many times my books have been downloaded. I wonder what these folks would do if they manage to anger all the authors so much that we stop producing books. Would they actually begin to buy books? Are they really voracious readers? Or do they just have the mentality that “If it’s on the internet, it should be free and I’ll grab mine” regardless of their reading preferences? I’d love to be able to poll them and ask how many stolen books they actually read.

If someone offered you immortality, but you could never write again…would you take the offer?

No. I wouldn’t take immortality no matter what. Since I buried and mourned two husbands, I couldn’t imagine watching everyone I loved die off and leave me alone with only memories.

What do you want your epitaph to read, at the end of your life?

She brought joy to many.

What are you currently reading?  How’s that going for you?

Joey Hill’s ROUGH CANVAS. She makes you cry, she makes you think, she makes you love (and hate) her characters. When I’m done, I know I’ll read it again.

What will you be reading next?

I’ll be taking a hiatus from my yard-long reading list because I’ve volunteered to judge the EPIC eBook Contest (Electronically Published Internet Connection). EPIC is the original and major voice advocating for electronic publishing. I expect to receive a dozen or more books to read over the next month in one or more of the erotic romance sub-genres. I’ve been judging this and other contests for years and have found many authors to add to my buy list, authors I might not otherwise have read.

In WHAT SHE WANTS, older widow Delia Barnes greets fellow authors before an erotic romance convention sporting a black eye, which she explains away with “I didn’t say ‘Yes, Master’ quick enough.” Sitting at the bar, burned-out ad executive and former Dom Kurt Reinhardt overhears that comment once too often and interrupts to suggest, “Maybe you need a new Master.”

Urged by her friends to accept the younger man’s invitation to learn some D/s basics—hey, an author needs to do her research, right?—Delia joins him to get first-hand experience at being submissive, starting with removing her panties in a corner booth. What I wasn’t entirely sure about was why people kept clicking on my site in search of free stories because I don’t have free stories to give away.  Not free MMF stories, anyway.  I have two free novels I give away when you sign up for my newsletter – one contemporary romance and one erotic romantic suspense.  Neither of them are MMF stories, although they are both romances.

So I thought I’d look into the availability of free MMF romance stories and provide a resource list for readers.

That was an education!

When you go looking for free romantic MMF stories, there’s 5 different types of stories you’ll trip over on in your searching:

1.  True Life MMF stories

These can run from badly written self-aggrandizing essays written by men explaining how they got the missus to come across with their mates, to long promotional peices written by women explaining how wonderful double-penetration can be and how much power MMF gives a woman over men, to everything in between.  Most of these are less than romantic, clinical or tongue-in-cheek non-fiction articles that don’t do a thing for your pulse or your imagination.

2.  Free Porn/Erotica

I nearly deleted the “Erotica” tag but left it there because there just might be some more classy sites out there that deserve the label.  I didn’t find them, though.

For these sites, you get what you pay for.  They’re usually badly written, often user-contributed stories that, while they are MMF stories, they’re anything but romantic.  You have to wade through an awful lot of crud and other non-MMF porn to find them, a lot of advertising and graphic images to get to them, too. In the end, they’re just porn, aimed for a primarily male audience that is interested only in getting off as quickly as possible.  There’s no attempt at characterisation and what plot exists is there to get the characters into having sex as quickly as possible.

3.  Pay-For Porn/Erotica

These sites are the same as for (2) but with a better quality story.  But it’s still just sex, with no romance or characterization, aimed for a male-oriented market.

4.  Free Romance Stories

There were a couple of sites that offer short romance stories.  As far as I could tell, these were original romances written specifically for the sites.  There were no MMF or erotic romance on the sites.  Because the stories were offered for the free the sites tended to be heavily ladened with advertisements, or the quality of the stories suffered.

5.  Pay-for MMF Romance Stories

These are your average publisher sites, like Ellora’s Cave, and booksellers, like Amazon.  You’re more than familiar with these already.  They do offer MMF romances, but they’re not free.

When I plugged “free romance MMF stories” into Google, there were no sites that included all the search terms in the results…except my own. Who’d've thunk, huh?

My own site turned up very high in the results page, linked to my post, “MM and MMF – Let’s Try Again. Why Do Women Like Men Who Like Men?” It does have all the search terms in it (as I spoke of Romans being free with their bed partners in that article.  Sheer coincidence, but that’s one of the quirks of Google).

So because I write romantic MMF stories (just not free), and rank very high for erotic romance in the first place, you can see why everyone’s been landing here looking for the free ones.  Desparately looking for the good stuff, as it happens, because there’s just not that much of the good stuff out there if you’re looking for it for free.

That’s the bottom line, folks.  There are no good free romantic MMF stories out there.

You have several alternatives.

1)  You can settle for the stuff you get on the free porn sites, or the free romance sites.

2)  You can pay for the MMF stuff on the pay-for porn sites.

3)  But if you’re going to pay for porn, then why waste your money on that?  Why not cut to the chase and just pay for MMF romances from publishers or Amazon?

4)  And because we’re talking about it openly these day, I have to add this alternative [with the usual caveat that this is not meant as a personal diatribe aimed at anyone who does not pirate books!]:  You can go download those same books from a pirate site or bit torrent.  And I’ll hate your guts and so will the author whose books you’re downloading.  But that will certainly fulfill all the requirements.  You’ll be getting free romantic MMF stories of the highest quality in the world.   And that’ll be one less book I or some other author will be able to afford to write.  So think about it before you go off and download.  Please.  Why not just pay the miniscule three or four dollars and get the exact MMF story you want, the minute you want it, minus the trojans, download hassles, viruses and peer-less headaches you get from bootleg sites, and in the correct format you want it in.  That way you’ll be encouraging authors to write even more of the stories you like.  Just a thought.
