Snicks – Decoration for Plain Text
Every time computers get more sophisticated, and you can start using formatted text and HTML for messages, some other device comes along that only uses plain text. Cell phones, PDAs, SMS messages of all sorts, readers…I’m sure there’ll be more as time goes on.
I’m not a huge fan of plain text.
But then, I’m one of those people who carts a trunkful of flowers, framed pictures, lamps, and other decorative peices to their day job to make their office look and feel more comfortable and welcoming. (Side note: I moved offices two weeks ago, and hauled my stuff over to the new one, re-arranged it, got the company’s electrician to remove every second neon tube in the lights overhead. Yesterday, I noticed that there’s pots of pretty fake flowers popping up in a lot of other offices, and the lighting is being turned down, too….)
But, back to plain text. You can decorate plain text using Snicks.
I honestly don’t know where the term came from, but it has been around the Internet as long as I have (and I’m not telling). It’s not ASCII art, which is a whole different animal — check here for some astounding examples of Ascii art, if you’re not familiar with it.
Snicks are cute flourishes and swirly touches made out of plain text. I love ‘em because they’re the equivalent of flowers and pictures in my office.
Here’s some examples you can steal — just cut and paste to save them, as they’re plain text and won’t change when you paste them. Cut and paste combinations to get different effects, then store them as pre-built peices of text you can insert when you need them.
