Finding More Time To Write On Weekends
It’s Friday, and if you’re like me, you’re breathing a sigh of relief that the work week is over, and you’re staring the weekend in the face, wondering if you’re going to be able to get as much done as you’d like.
One way to maximise your writing, and your weekends, is to not sleep in.
Harder than it sounds, I know. I’ve struggled with this one myself. After hauling your butt through a tough week, knocking yourself out twice over (for the job and for the career), the prospect of being able to sleep yourself out on Saturday morning is heavenly. A genuine treat.
Except you’re really not doing yourself any favours.
1. You’re losing writing time for every minute you stay in bed. Obvious. That’s why it’s #1.
2. You’re screwing with your body clock, confusing it, and ensuring you’re going to hate Monday morning with even more passion than usual, because over the weekend your body has already begun to adjust to the later rising.
3. By Sunday night you’ll hate yourself for not getting as much done as you’d hoped you would, way back on Friday afternoon.
Getting up at the same time each day, including weekends, will make you feel fresh, alert, and productive. Steve Pavlina has a whole post on how to train yourself to get up early each day at his excellent blog.
Getting up early is always a great way to get some serious work done before the rest of the sluggish world arises. These are pure, uninterrupted golden hours.
And you’ll feel a sense of smug satisfaction on Sunday night, when you realize how much you got done this weekend.
Try it. You’ll like it, I promise.
