5 Really Good Paranormal Romance Review Sites
Here’s five of the review sites for paranormal romance novels that I most often hit when I’m looking for recommendations, or to check on what they think of a book before I plunk down my money.
There’s other review sites I visit, but I’ve chosen these because of their paranormal aspects, which some review sites don’t specialize in, focus upon or filter in any particular way.
I’ve also chosen not to include any sites with an Alexa ranking higher than two million, which cuts out most of the one-man-shows reviewing books for the love of it…except for those like Smexy, below, who have a genuine following.
Bitten By Books
Paranormal Review Site with Bite.
Alexa ranking as of this posting: 510,566
I adore that this blog/review site is devoted to all things vampire. Even the RSS icon is a headstone. The head banner is gorgeous, and there’s other evidence of a quirky sense of humour running throughout the blog. However, even this site has clearly tainted their pure blood: there are reviews of paranormal books that feature other fantasy creatures besides vampires. There does seem to be a lean towards New York publishers. But surprisingly, I also found some self-published and small press books in amongst the pile. So there isn’t a total bias there.
PNR
Alexa ranking as of this posting: 1,016,530
The PNR Review site is a sub-site of the Para-Normal-Romance group, but operates almost completely independently of the parent organization. Although the site doesn’t see huge amounts of traffic, judging by Alexa, what’s most refreshing about the site and the reviews, is that I normally can’t detect any bias towards New York traditionally-published novels. There are all publishers, all formats and all authors to be found here.
Smexy Books
Alexa ranking as of this posting: 749,564
I really like Smexy. Although Mandi’s not exclusively into paranormal, she leans very hard in that direction, along with a heavy dollop of erotic romance, which makes her an almost perfect blending of my personal taste, and of what I write, too. So I tend to stop in and visit Smexy every day to see what she’s read lately. I’ve picked up more than one or two books based on her recommendation and so far I haven’t been sorry. Her eye candy is hard to take, too.
Night Owl Romance Reviews
Alexa ranking as of this posting: 1,657,557
Night Owl Romance provide everything for the romance reader, not just paranormal reviews. I’ve linked to the review page, and once you’re there, you can selected from the advanced search features to sort out just paranormal reviews, for anywhere from just in the last week, up to and including all paranormal reviews they’ve ever done (brace yourself). I like this site because the interface is clean and uncluttered. The reviews are usually thoughtful and I’ve not been led astray by a review that raves about a book that I’ve later found to be a dud. They’re also completely unbiased about New York/epub/small press. If they like a romance, they say so. If they don’t like it, they say so. Doesn’t seem to matter whose name is on the cover, or whose imprint is on the spine.
Coffee Time Romance Reviews
Alexa ranking as of this posting: 404,376
I didn’t add Coffeetime just because they gave me such a fabulous review, please note. But I did start reading their reviews after I got mine. I like the clean and uncluttered interface — always a bonus. They’re unbiased about publishers and formats, and their Alexa ranking proves they get a helluva lot of traffic through the site, which means their reviews are probably widely read and therefore probably agreed upon and trusted. I’ve yet to see anyone screaming in protest over their ratings, and they have an active blog where commentors can speak their mind. Like Night Owl, they review all types of romance, but you can select for only Paranormal, and I’ve linked directly to that page.
